Health data collected via BioBase
BioBase offers a new approach to mental health support. Through the BioBase app and wearable device, employee health data is collected in real-time and presented back to users as a dynamic Wellbeing Score. Below is more information about the health data collected:
Biometric data ❤️
Employees taking part in the programme are provided with a wearable device (BioBeam). The device captures biometric data including:
- Physical activity,
- Heart rate variability (HRV)
- Heart rhythm
Below is more information about each health metric.
Sleep is a key component of good health and wellbeing which is why, at night the BioBeam monitors the number of hours slept as well as sleep phases (light, deep and awake). Light sleep enhances both physical and mental recovery and usually makes up most of a night’s sleep.
While, deep sleep, the dreaming phase, consists of two phases, one that helps the body to recover, and another known as the Rapid Eye Movement (REM). While the first phase is important for memory and assimilation of newly learned things, the REM phase of deep sleep is crucial for processing the day’s experiences.
Physical Activity. The BioBeam records the number of steps taken each day. The goal is 6,000 steps per day, however, this may fluctuate depending on personal abilities and fitness levels. Users can adjust the goal within the app.
Heart rate variability (HRV) measures the variation in the time between each heartbeat. A key indicator of stress, HRV is controlled by the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) which regulates other bodily functions such as blood pressure, breathing and digestion.
ANS is divided into two branches, the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) that creates the ‘fight-or-flight’ response or the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) that creates ‘rest-and-digest’.
The ANS is affected by stimuli, such as a poor night’s sleep or walking up a flight of stairs. Each activates the SNS, quickly followed by the PNS.
When under stress the ANS becomes unbalanced. In fight-or-flight mode, HRV is low, this is linked to reduced mood and increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
In rest-and-digest mode, HRV is high. Those with high HRV have a more resilient system and therefore able to ‘bounce back’ from stress quicker.
Heart rhythm is a natural energy pattern seen throughout the day. It’s an employee’s internal body clock. While it’s normal for heart rhythm to change during the day and repeat in cycles, it can easily be disrupted by unhealthy behaviours and poor health.
Psychometric data 🧠
To help your employees understand their mental health, BioBase also collects data relating to the mind.
Mood tracking. Users are prompted to log their mood throughout the day. Mood tracking is proven to help employees learn about their mood patterns, improve their mood, and self-manage mental illnesses.
With BioBase, users can also associate a mood with a specific location, activity or even a person. Thus over time, the app learns how certain behaviour patterns impact mood and provides guidance and advice back to employees.
Cognitive function. When stressed, the ability to think clearly can be compromised which is why BioBase offers an Executive Function Test (EFT).
Taken weekly, the EFT measures the flexibility and speed in an employee’s ability to process information. It tests a user’s ability to filter information and focus.
All data points are combined to generate a Wellbeing Score. The score is a dynamic number that goes up or down during the day, depending on the health and wellbeing of each employee.
